There was a time when music that demanded a one-to-one listening experience was derided as the stuff of lonely bedsits. But in recent years singer- songwriters such as José González have restored pride in that breed of melancholic, solitary performer. Brooklyn native LD Brown, aka Grey Reverend, fits into that genre. Armed with just an acoustic guitar, a nimble finger-style and a voice of semi-detached velvet monotone, Brown weaves a curious spell that implies knowledge and emotion beyond the obvious. His debut album lasts just over 33 minutes, its nine tracks offering lyrical wordplay and musical flourish that beguiles with a quiet intensity. The use of what sounds like a clip of domestic conflict at the end of Box is unsettling, but other tracks – Like
Mockingbirds, Forsake, Walk the Sameand the closing
Road Less Travelled – all reach deep. See greyreverend. com
