FIS, a joint initiative from Architectural Association of Ireland and the National Sculpture Factory, is a competition to bring architects and sculptors from around the country together work on a theoretical project, for which budgets and other tiresome issues can happily be ignored.
This year's Sisk sponsored competition, to create a plan for the meadow area at IMMA saw entries from an extensive range of sculptors and architects, and included collaborations between Maud Cotter and Terri Sweeny, Vivienne Roche and Tom De Paor, and Corban and Simon Walker.
The winners selected by a jury of IMMA supremo Declan McGonagle architect Tony Fretton and sculptor, Tony Cragg were the teams of Brian Connolly and Noel Brady, John McHugh and Paul Kelly, Mary McGinty and Dermot Boyd and Morgan Doyle and Lisa Harmey.
Among the many intriguing proposals were projects that would incorporate pressure activated sound effects, illuminated pathways and wind generated sound effects being built at Kilmainham. None of these fascinating works is, however, destined to be built anytime soon.
