‘Leprechauns’ cave’ granted planning permission from Louth County Council

Louth County Council has granted planning permission for an underground tourist attraction that will be billed as a “leprechauns’ cave”.

The project is the mastermind of Carlingford native Kevin Woods, who had already developed the site beside Carlingford Lough.

However, the council said he needed planning permission, so he applied for retention of the underground cavern at Ghan Road, Carlingford.

Confirming permission had been granted, a council spokesman said, “This is the first time we would have given approval for such a facility. The council through the Louth Economic Tourism and Heritage forum will be promoting the facility to attract national and international visitors to the county to view this very unique venue.”

The Trip Advisor page for attractions in Louth has ranked it as the number one attraction, ahead of St Peter’s Church, home to the head of St Oliver Plunkett, and Dundalk Stadium.
