Pop Corner: Demi Lovato stays cool while the rest of us get hot and bothered

The latest pop news, including Ed Sheeran’s ‘really, really dark’ acting gig and the skinny on Cheryl’s Instagram blow-up

Track of the week: Cool for the Summer by Demi Lovato Sweaty, summery and sultry, this track is all about identifying what you want and taking it – in this case, a summer fling. The vibe is more Euro than EDM, with a nifty keyboard hook. Meanwhile, several fans have pointed out the I Kissed a Girl similarities (including a line referencing cherries), but to these ears it's more Kylie than Katie. That is, until the bridge comes in and Demi really shows what she can do – her signature big vocal is alive and well. Now on repeat.

Hero of the week: Ed Sheeran's new acting gig. Sheeran's going to be in a TV show. "I have an acting job coming out after July," Ed told the Sun. "I can't say too much about it because the pilot just got picked up, which is good, but it's a TV show."

He went on: “It’s a medieval TV show and it’s really, really dark. It’s gruesome and it’s going to be fine because my friend wrote it. He had a musician in his last show and I said, ‘Oh, did he audition for that?’ and he said, ‘No, but I just thought he would be good in it.’ So I said, ‘Can you put me in a show next?’”

Zero of the week: Instagram hate, as Cheryl proved. Responding to a comment calling her too skinny, Cheryl typed : "I am so sick and tired of it being ok to call somebody too thin or a 'bag of bones'. I would never dream of calling somebody too fat and that they should maybe cut down on their food intake? What is the difference?"
