High initial sales of Apple's latest consumer computer prompted stocks in the Cupertino company to rise to a three-year high of more than $43 (£30) per share.

The sleek, translucent turquoise iMac hit the retail shelves last weekend, with many shops in the US reporting sales in excess of normal Christmas levels. Apple said that it had taken orders for 150,000 of the new machines.
