The long-awaited official launch date for Sony's PlayStation 2 has been set for October 26th, 2000 in Europe and North America. Following an announcement at Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles this week, the company said the launch would be accompanied by an unprecedented initial launch shipment of one million units, followed by an additional two million units up to March 31st, 2001.
PlayStation 2 has been designed to offer users games, music and movies from a single device, and will support both the audio CD and DVD-video formats. The new system will also support existing PlayStation software. It has seen phenomenal demand and has overcome early glitches.
