In November, Simon Carswell reported that the Government plans to hold a civic forum to engage with Irish citizens abroad on plans to hold a referendum to allow them vote in presidential elections. And, on Friday, Justine McCarthy teased out some of the issues involved.

Should Ireland give the diaspora a vote on the president of Ireland?
Currently, voting in elections and referendums is open to all citizens resident in the Republic of Ireland who are over 18, as well as those who move abroad but plan to return within 18 months. Several Irish organisations abroad have long pushed for the extension of voting rights to Irish passport holders in the diaspora.
