Camera upgrade and SOS features on Apple’s new entry level iPhone 14

Tech Tools: Apple iPhone 14

It’s all about Apple this week. The iPhone 14 joined the Pro and Pro Max line-up with new size and a few features that distinguish it from the existing top-of-the-line iPhone. Physically, everything looks similar ― mostly — but there’s the notch, for example. While Pro users get the shape-shifting Dynamic Island punched out of the screen, the iPhone 14 keeps the notch for the camera and sensors.

The real changes from the iPhone 13 are ones you can’t spot as easily. The front-facing camera has been upgraded and now includes autofocus. Low light performance has been improved across the board so you should get better shots even when lighting conditions are less than optimal. A new crash detection feature will alert emergency services if the sensors detect the telltale signs of a car accident, while the satellite capabilities will allow you to call for help even if you are out of mobile network range — at least in the US and Canada for now.
