Apple extends self-service repairs to Irish customers

Expansion of programme sees 24 new countries added to list

Apple has extended its self-service repair programme to Irish customers, allowing them to repair their own iPhones and other devices.

The move is part of an expansion of the programme that sees self-repair made available to 24 more European countries, and the addition of the iPhone 15 and M2-powered Macs to the initiative. That includes the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro, the 15-inch MacBook Air, Mac mini, Mac Pro and Mac Studio.

A total of 35 products in 33 countries are now supported by the repair programme.

Apple has also made Apple Diagnostics available for self-service repair, initially in the US, before rolling it out to European countries next year. The troubleshooting system will allow people to test functionality and performance on devices as part of the self-service repair, in addition to pinpointing which parts need to be fixed.

The programme, which was announced in November 2021 and began operating a few months later, gives people access to the manuals, genuine Apple parts and tools to repair their own devices. The move comes alongside a push at EU level to make electronics more easily repairable and limit the problem of electronic waste.

Apple said repairability was an important concern for the company, although its priority was creating devices that maximised their lifespan. It has made a number of changes to the design of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 to make them more durable and easier to repair, including redesigning the internal chassis and using titanium in the iPhone 15 Pro.
