Waterford IT 0-21 Limerick IT 1-14:Waterford IT's march to the semi-finals of the Fitzgibbon Cup reminds team manager Colm Bonnar of their 2008 heroics. Bonnar stepped into the breach late last year when WIT were looking to fill their managerial vacancy.

Bonnar, the former Wexford manager and a two-time All-Ireland SHC medallist with Tipperary, captained WIT when they won the Fitzgibbon Cup in 1995. But he’s also coached five WIT teams to Fitzgibbon Cup success and could not resist the lure of another crack at glory. He recalled: “I remember one year, we didn’t win a game coming into the Fitzgibbon. That was in 2008 and you know what happened from there.”

Classic final

WIT beat Davy Fitzgerald’s side in a classic final five years ago and they won by four points yesterday.

Kilkenny’s Eoin Murphy, substitute goalkeeper for the county last year en route to All-Ireland glory, showed how good he is as an outfield player.

Murphy, from the Glenmore club, hit 1-8 for WIT against Cork IT in the group stages and bagged 0-9 yesterday, including seven frees. Waterford pair Jake Dillon and Gavin O’Brien were also impressive for WIT in attack, as Tipp’s Séamus Callanan hit eight points for LIT, seven of those from frees.

At half-time, WIT led by 0-12 to 1-6 but LIT had played against the breeze from the start at Carriganore and Jamie Fitzgibbon’s 27th minute goal helped to whittle down an early eight-point deficit. But WIT held firm in the second half to set up a semi-final meeting with Mary Immaculate College.
