Whistle blown on Wexford scene

Wexford referees yesterday blew the final whistle on the local GAA scene.

Wexford referees yesterday blew the final whistle on the local GAA scene.

The County Referees Association had some weeks back decided to withdraw their services following the decision of the County Disciplinary Committee to uphold the Sarsfields club's appeal in relation to the straight red carding of Gavin Buggy in the county junior football championship final.

Their decision not to support referee Jim Morrissey made Buggy available for the senior hurling championship semi-final and final. As a result Morrissey has retired from refereeing, while the referees association have demanded the resignation of the county disciplinary committee.

In an effort to break the deadlock , the Wexford County Management Committee will meet with the referees association tomorrow evening.

It is expected to be a heated discussion as the referees seek reassurances about their authority in future games and also seek the resignation of the county disciplinary committee.

As it stands, Wexford referees chairman Tommy Kirwan feels their responsibilities have been eroded.

Wexford Management Committee are anxious that the dispute be resolved but the referees are determined not to have a repetition of the incident which put one of their members under considerable pressure after that junior semi-final.

Further action was also taken in relation to the after-match scenes following the county junior football final with the Sarsfields club fined £1,000, while Liam Murphy was suspended for six months.
