NFL DIVISION FOUR/Waterford 0-20 Clare 2-5:THERE WERE scenes of jubilation at Fraher Field, Dungarvan, yesterday when the final whistle sounded as a Waterford win saw the county promoted to Division Three.

Waterford dominated this tie from the start and though they fell behind briefly midway through the first half when Gary Brennan put Clare into a 1-3 to 0-5 lead, with a well worked 17th-minute goal, the home side hit back to take control with six unanswered points before the break for a 0-11 to 1-3 lead.

Two points from the outstanding Gary Hurney after just five minutes of the second half followed by another from Brian Wall had Clare very much on the back foot and when midfielder David Russell was red-carded in the 44th minute it was always going to be an uphill struggle for Clare to get back into this game.

The issue was well decided by the 67th minute when Clare were awarded a penalty which David Tubridy converted to put a better look on the scoreboard.

This was Hurney’s second full game since leaving the county hurling panel to join the footballers and manager Johnny Owens readily acknowledged the big man’s contribution.
