GAELIC GAMES:MICHAEL FENNELLY got his intercounty hurling management career off to a bright start when he saw Laois account for an under -strength UCD side at Rathdowney yesterday 0-24 to 2-14. Laois's Willie Hyland was on top form and notched 0-11 of their winning total. DIT corner-forward Paul Ryan had a field day against Carlow yesterday, amassing 1-12 as the students eased to victory by 2-17 to 1-13. Carlow looked rusty and were very wayward in their finishing, hitting a total of 15 wides which will be a concern to manager Kevin Ryan.

NUIG knocked Offaly out on a scoreline of 0-22 to 1-10 at Banagher on Saturday. Offaly led at the break but the dominance of Joseph Cooney and Domhnall O’Donovan in midfield gave NUIG a platform and Caimin Morey and Niall Burke picked off some fine scores to set up the victory.

Antrim disposed of Westmeath 3-12 to 2-11 with super sub PJ O’Connell proving the difference as he sprang from the bench to rattle off 2-4 in just 35 minutes of action.
