Former Scotland captain Rob Wainwright has announced his retirement from international rugby. Wainwright, who led his country 16 times, was left out of the Five Nations squad and has been on the sidelines since turning out for Edinburgh Reivers two months ago.
Wainwright made his Scotland debut in 1992 as a replacement lock against Ireland at Lansdowne Road.
He was appointed Scotland captain in 1995 before being replaced by Gary Armstrong. Wainwright regained the captaincy for Scotland's tour to Fiji and Australia in 1998.
The pinnacle of his career came in 1997 when he made eight appearances on the British Lions tour to South Africa. He scored a hat-trick of tries in the game against Mpumalanga and started the historic last Test in Johannesburg.
"I have not had a chance to show myself to the selectors. I was beginning to get the drift they were looking elsewhere, especially through the November internationals," said Wainwright.
