US-based four prepare to climb

CYCLING/News round-up: Irealand's US-based professionals have their biggest assignment of the year this Sunday when they line out in the US Pro Championships in Philadelphia, the final event in the prestigious First Union Series.

FBD Milk Rás winner Ciarán Power (Navigators) and the Ofoto-Lombardi Sports trio of David O'Loughlin, James Hodnett and John Brady will be amongst the 200-strong field to tackle the 156-mile event, which includes 10 ascents of the fearsome 1-in-5 Manayunk Wall.

Power's role is likely to be one supporting his team-mates but the other Irishmen should have a freer rein. O'Loughlin in particular seems in fine form, riding strongly in the series-opening First Union Invitational earlier this week.

Back home, Cycling Ireland have confirmed the details of the new Team Ireland set-up in Belgium, with the first riders expected to travel early next month to the base in Tongeren, near Liege. Eugene Moriarty is to act as co-ordinator for the project which will enable Irish competitors to live and race abroad and is being funded by the Sports Council.

The emphasis is mainly on the developmental level (junior and under-23), although elite riders will also be able to use the facilities which can cater for 14 riders at any one time. A pool of riders has been drawn up but others can contact the Federation's High Performance Group at 01 855 1522.

Finally, the death this week of Paddy Sullivan came as a blow to the sport. The Eagle CC clubman had a long involvement in cycling, as both a rider and as an official. Epitomising the volunteer ethos, he was respected and liked due to his helpful and friendly nature. He will be greatly missed.
