BASKETBALL: Only UCD Marian and Star of the Sea remain unbeaten after another weekend of ESB Superleague action. UCC Demons let victory slip away in their home game against UCD Marian, having led for the first three quarters, writes Ian O'Riordan
The Demons were on fire in the opening quarter, opening up a 26-17 lead, which they stretched to 43-31 at half-time. Marian came back and looked a different team, upping their defence to keep Demons to 10 points in the period while narrowing the deficit to three, 53-50, at the end of the third quarter.
Marian's Jermaine Turner and Mike Trimmer were in foul trouble going into the final quarter, but Demons failed to capitalise and lost more ground early in the quarter. Marian continued their momentum, outscoring Demons 32-23 in the final quarter to secure the 82-76 victory and their position above Demons on the Superleague table.
Elsewhere, Waterford battled hard before they earned their league points with a 74-71 victory over Tralee Tigers.
