KERRY manager Paidi O Se had to refer back to 1975 to explain to the Tipperary players how he felt about their superb challenge in Austin Stack Park yesterday.

"I won my first All Ireland medal in 1975 and it was the game against Tipperary, a real test, that set up Kerry that year.

"I recall in that Munster championship match against Tipperary being taught how tough you have to be when clashing with Babsi Keating. Tipperary made it hard for our young team that year, and I am delighted that you made it so hard for us today and because of that we are sure to benefit later on. Hopefully, you have played a big part in an All Ireland for us this year," said O Se.

The Kerry manager complimented the Tipperary players on their resilient display. "That early goal we got in the second half would have killed off the Clares; and the Corks, but not ye," he added.

O Se said that it had not been a day for his forwards. "We were not getting scores today and I think they became frustrated. I tell you I am glad we have this match behind us.

"You have to live in hope when you are in my position," said Paddy Morrissey, the Tipperary manager.

"I have been telling lies for the past few weeks. We wanted so badly to do well. Today showed how good we can be. Kerry, it must be said, were poor in the first half, no doubt their lack of match practice since winning the League told against them.

"We took a while to get used to the pace over the first quarter. The loo training sessions we have had stood us in good stead I am pleased to say and the future looks bright with so many young players in the squad."
