HARTY CUP ROUND-UP:BOTH TIPPERARY and Cork have three teams apiece in the quarter-finals of the Dr Harty Cup (Munster Colleges' Senior Hurling Championship) after the last round of qualifying yesterday, while Limerick and Clare supply one each.

Thurles CBS, last year’s beaten finalists and bidding to make it to their fourth consecutive decider, join Nenagh CBS and Our Lady’s Templemore in the last eight following a hard-fought 0-13 to 0-10 victory over Waterford Colleges in Clonmel.

The Templemore college, who had already qualified along with Nenagh CBS, powered past the weak challenge offered by Coláiste Chríost Rí, sweeping home by 5-21 to 0-9 in a dead rubber.

Cork will be represented by Charleville CBS, Midleton CBS and St Colman’s, Fermoy, while the holders Ardscoil Rís (Limerick) and Ennis powerhouses St Flannan’s complete the list.

The quarter-finals will be played on January 19th.

The game of the day was played in perfect conditions at Ballybrown, where Charleville CBS pipped St Caimin’s, Shannon, for a place in the next stage by scoring an injury-time goal to force a 3-10 to 2-13 draw.

And the north Cork school qualified by having a one-point better scoring difference than their unlucky opponents after they also finished level on points in the group.

Centre-back David Reidy was the Charleville hero, popping up with the equalising goal in a dramatic finish. The winners led by 2-7 to 1-7 at half-time, following goals from Pá O’Callaghan and James O’Brien, who both finished with 1-4 each.

But Charleville were held scoreless from the 37th minute until Reidy’s heroics as St Caimin’s took full control with Aaron Cunningham totalling an impressive 1-9. The result meant that Charleville CBS made it through to the quarter-finals for the first time in 16 years.

Midleton CBS sailed into the quarters in a one-sided romp against an outclassed Kerry Colleges selection, winning by 7-17 to 2-3 with Daniel Morrissey emerging as the star of the show by scoring an impressive 4-4. St Colman’s survived a stern test from Waterford Colleges, scraping home by 1-12 to 0-12.

St Flannan’s also went on a scoring rampage, clocking up a 5-25 to 2-6 victory over De La Salle Waterford in another game of no consequence.

The quarter-finalists are: Thurles CBS, St Flannan’s, Our Lady’s Templemore, Charleville CBS, Midleton CBS, Nenagh CBS, Ardscoil Rís (holders), St Colman’s, Fermoy.
