THROUGH their own efforts, and those of others, Muckross could effectively complete the League and Cup double this weekend. The Dublin side meet Pegasus in the final of the Irish Senior Cup at Belfield tomorrow afternoon in a rerun of the last two finals, which has seen the cup shared between the teams.
Pegasus beat Muckross 2-0 last year, and again look to be the stronger team, mainly because they have five current internationals on their side, compared to Muckross two.
Clare Samways and Clare McMahon are on top form, as was evident from their performances for Ireland earlier in the month, and they will pose the greatest danger to the Muckross goal.
But Sandra O'Gorman is in action for Muckross. She is still arguably Ireland's best goalkeeper, even though she had to withdraw from the Irish squad due to work commitments.
Mary Logue and Sarah Kelleher are Muckross's current internationals. Logue is always dangerous and poses the most serious threat to Pegasus. With the calibre of players on both sides, the match looks set to be a cracker.
In the Leinster League Muckross may find themselves champions before completing their programme. Loreto must beat Old Alexandra tomorrow if they are to have a mathematical chance of watching Muckross. If the title is not theirs on Sunday evening, it most probably will be on Monday. Muckross play Hermes and need only a scoreless draw to win the title. Muckross have only failed once this season to score in a league match.
The real fight now is to avoid relegation. Clontarf and Maids are on equal points at the bottom of the league. Both teams have tough fixtures, Clontarf play Railway Union while Maids face Pembroke.
UCC meet Harlequins in the replay of the Munster Senior Cup at Harlequin Park on Sunday. The match remained scoreless after extra time last Saturday.
