Temple prey on Churchtown

Schools' rugby/Leinster round-up: It was a busy day on the schools front in Leinster yesterday with several games down for decision. The clash between DLS Churchtown and Mount Temple in Templeogue was a replay of last week's abandoned McMullen Cup affair.

This time more clement conditions than last Thursday's torrential rain allowed for the completion of this Senior Cup Section A affair.

And it was Mount Temple who prevailed with Max Rantz-McDonald helping himself to two tries. The centre was capped at youths level for his country last year while with Clontarf and he provided his side with the cutting edge, going over for his first try after just two minutes.

But Churchtown, with the aid of a strong wind, countered after that and were 13-5 ahead at the break courtesy of a Mark Hudson try. The other points came from centre Warren Doyle who kicked two penalties and a drop goal.

A converted Rantz-McDonald try coupled with an Ian Denham penalty saw Temple back in front.

But Churchtown then enjoyed a good spell of pressure and were just yards away from the opposition line.

With Temple pulling out all the stops, they were eventually able to clear their line. And they added the insurance points though a Jake O'Keefe try and an Ian Denham try late on.

It was quarter-final day in the Duff Cup, which sets up an interesting tie between Naas and St Patrick's, Navan, in the last four.

The double act of John McNulty and Eoin Mulhall saw Naas defeat Skerries while a try from prop Anthony Cutajar proved the defining score in the St Patrick's 16-3 victory over Good Counsel.

Good Counsel's penalty came from Brendan O'Gara, first cousin of senior international Ronan.

Ian McKinlay, whose father Horace played alongside Irish international Philip Orr at Old Wesley, scored 17 of St Columba's points as they defeated St Conleth's at Merrion Road.

And in the other game down for decision, Maynooth accounted for St Fintan's 45-5, after building up a 33-5 half-time lead courtesy of a strong breeze.
