International friendly/Spain - 1 England - 0: England striker Wayne Rooney stormed off in disgust after being substituted by Sven-Goran Eriksson in the pivotal moment of a bad-tempered clash with Spain which ended in a one-goal defeat for England at the Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid.

Rooney had already been booked in the first half for pushing Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas and then he was removed from the action in the 42nd minute by Eriksson after another late challenge on Carlos Marchena.

Monkey chants also appeared to be directed at England defender Ashley Cole after he had been yellow carded for a challenge on Michel Salgado three minutes before the interval as the friendly match edged towards conflict.

There had been little indication of the furore to follow in the opening half-hour when Spain dominated proceedings and were given a 10th-minute lead by Asier Del Horno.

England failed to clear an in-swinging corner which found Del Horno and his header looped past Paul Robinson, whose vision was obstructed by Raul, and Wayne Bridge on the far post.

England tried to reply but Rooney was fortunate to escape a yellow card after a reckless challenge on Joaquin.

England were constantly trying to play in Rooney and Michael Owen with passes over the top of the home defence. Owen was particularly incensed on one occasion to be given offside from Bridge's pass.

After 24 minutes, Robinson produced a penalty save to prevent Raul doubling the home side's lead. It looked a harsh decision when Greek referee George Kasnaferis ruled Robinson brought down Raul after he had been played in by Joaquin. But Robinson dived to his left to keep out Raul's well struck shot.

There were ugly scenes in the top tier of one of the stands with fighting breaking out between rival sets of fans.

But the closing minutes of the opening half were dominated by the over-the-top behaviour of Rooney who was substituted by Sven-Goran Eriksson because there was an increasing danger of him being red-carded.

Rooney picked up a booking after 39 minutes when, after chasing a lost cause, he pushed Casillas into the advertising hoardings behind his goal.

Then he incensed the home players after a late challenge on Carlos Marchena and a couple of minutes later he was taken off and replaced by Alan Smith.

Rooney threw to the ground the armband being worn by the England players in memory of the late Emlyn Hughes before departing to a crescendo of boos.

The second half was a tedious affair with neither side creating much in the way of goal chances, the game becoming increasingly dominated by the crowd's abuse of England's players, a carry-over from the acrimonious under-21 clash of Tuesday night.
