Boxing: "So far so good," was coach Peter Taylor's reaction after watching his daughter, Katie, cruise into the quarter-final of the women's world boxing championships in India yesterday.
Taylor, from the St Fergal's club in Bray, marched into the last eight after stopping Finland's Eva Walstrom (ranked fifth in the world) on the 15-point rule (19-4) in round two of their last 16 lightweight clash in New Delhi.
The win arrived just 24 hours after she stopped American national champion Caroline Barry on the 15-point rule (16-1) in round one of their preliminary bout. Taylor, who won her second European title on the trot in September and is ranked at number one in the world, will now meet Romanian Florinna Pop in the quarter-finals tomorrow with a bronze medal up for grabs.
Taylor (20) has already beaten Pop three times including her recent win over the Romanian in the Venus Cup in Denmark. Taylor senior, an ex Irish champion at light heavyweight, said he believes it is going to get really tough from here on in.
"Katie is boxing extremely well and she has only conceded five points so far in two fights and it has been a fantastic start to the championships. She is coping very well with the heat over here and she will be confident boxing Pop as she has beaten her a few times already. It is a case of so far so good and we're looking forward to Tuesday."
Irish Amateur Boxing Association technical director Gary Keegan said they were keeping their fingers crossed Taylor can continue to impress. "Her two victories so far have been fantastic so finger crossed she can make it three."
