HURLING/Fitzgibbon Cup: Yesterday's two preliminary round games provided, as expected, easy passages for Garda College and the University of Limerick, both sides enjoying plenty of target practice against their respective victims, Queen's University and Trinity College.
Garda College ran out 5-14 to 1-1 winners over Queen's in Belfast, with Kilkenny's Owen Behan racking up a personal tally of 4-6, while Liam O'Connor contributed a further 1-3.
The Queen's goal, arriving just after half-time but providing little solace, was scored by Ruairí McGrattan.
An under-strength Trinity College were beaten 5-22 to 0-4 by an impressive UL. With six players unavailable due to exam commitments, Trinity couldn't cope with the class and power of a Limerick team boasting a number of top inter-county players.
After being kicked out of last year's competition for fielding an ineligible player, UL are desperate to make amends this year. On the evidence of this showing, they're a serious threat to WIT, UCD and UCC.
