The Royal College of Surgeons women's team produced the surprise result on the opening day of the intervarsity tournament in Limerick yesterday when they beat Chilean Cup holders Trinity in the first of the day's Pool A matches. Loreto's Rachel Brophy scored twice in a 2-1 win over the team going for their fifth successive title.

Trinity, however, got back to winning ways later in the day when they beat DCU 1-0, while RCSI went down 4-0 to the University of Ulster, Jordanstown, for whom Lisa Martin scored twice.

Those results leave four of Pool B's five teams with a reasonable chance of making tomorrow's semi-finals, including UCC, who had to make do without their first choice goalkeeper, Orla McCarthy, who is suffering from glandular fever. Pool B is equally competitive with Queen's, the University of Limerick and UCD are all tied on three points.

Queen's opened their campaign with a 30 win over NUIG, with goals from Linda Coulter and Jane Carlisle (two), but later lost 2-0 to hosts, the University of Limerick.

In the men's Mauritius Cup, holders Trinity got off to a winning start in their only game of the day - they beat RCSI 3-0 - but they go into day two level on points with DCU (Malcolm Jeffers and David Barrett scored their goals in a 2-0 win over UCC) and UCC, for whom Andrew Kingston scored twice against RCSI in their 5-0 victory.

The only team to win two games on day one were the men of UUJ, who beat UCD and the University of Limerick.

Their game today against Queen's, who beat Limerick in their only game of the day, could determine who finishes top of the pool.
