Banishing the ghost of their 10-0 Champions League humiliation to little-known Moldovans Zimbru Chisinau three years ago will be very much in the minds of St Patrick's Athletic tomorrow as they chase a 3-2 deficit against NK Rijeka for a shot at Belgian side KAA Gent in the first round of the InterToto Cup (Richmond Park, 3.30).
Pat Dolan's side surprised the Croatians by leading them twice in the first leg on the Adriatic coast last Saturday, before succumbing to two goals in the final minute.
"It will be a tight game," says midfielder Paul Osam, one of several players still at the club who played in the Zimbru tie. "They're a technically good, fit, strong and well-organised team. But we've certainly given them something to think about after our first-leg performance.
"How they will react when they are put under pressure remains to be seen. We played a containing game over there due to the hot conditions and the fact we knew little of their ability.
"I think they were surprised by us. They were a little disrespectful in the local papers prior to the game. They thought it was only a matter of turning up and going out and beating us. Before the first game they may have thought it was a formality. They know now they are in a cup tie.
"Anybody that played in those games first and foremost owes themselves something," says Osam. "After that you then owe the fans and the club."
Dolan has a big concern over midfielder Martin Russell (hamstring) while Charles Mbabazi Livingstone is also a doubt with a knee injury.
