Diarmaid McRory had netted for St Mel's on seven minutes but St Declan's countered well. Bernard Brogan, the son of a famous father of the same name, was their top scorer on the day with 1-3, and put his side back on level terms with a penalty before the break.

St Mel's responded in kind 11 minutes after the break when Joe Ó Brian converted from the spot after Adrian Murphy had been dragged down.
