There were Group Two Setanta Cup wins for Derry City and Linfield this evening while Shelbourne were left to endure more goalkeeping misery at Windsor Park.
Two first half goals from defender Sean Hargan and a third from Gary Beckett ensured Derry a comfortable win at a waterlogged Brandywell.
Glentoran’s first competitive visit to Derry in 36 years was not a pleasant one as the Irish League side never got to grips with the full-time Candystripes. Chris Walker scored a late consolation equaliser for the visitors.
In Belfast Linfield capitalised on more poor goalkeeping from Shelbourne’s Dean Delaney. Costly mistakes allowed Michael Gault and Peter Thompson to get on the scoresheet either side of the break.
Of more serious note Delaney was then stretchered off the pitch when it looked like he took a blow to the head when challenging for Avun Jephcott’s cross with Tom Mouncey for the second goal.
Linfield and Derry now share top spot in the mini-league on five points while Shelbourne are a further point behind. Glentoran prop up the Group Two table with just one point.
