Soccer: The PFAI will not be representing either player involved in the League of Ireland racism row that emerged this week.

The accused, a Shamrock Rovers player who denies an accusation of racism made by Derry City striker Eamon Zayed after Monday’s 1-1 draw at Tallaght Stadium, today sought the assistance of the association.

Zayed put his case to the PFAI yesterday and, since both players are members, the association has decided not to represent either during the FAI’s investigation into the matter.

“The player, who is also a member of the Association, sought to seek the assistance of the PFAI in dealing with the allegation,” the PFAI confirmed this evening. “The player reiterated his stance that he has not made any racist comment in accordance with the statement released by Shamrock Rovers FC last night.

“The PFAI has consulted with its solicitor, Stuart Gilhooly, who has advised that as both players are members of the Association and have conflicting recollections of the events in question, that it would not be appropriate for the Association to represent either party.

“The PFAI still believes that justice should be served in accordance with the FAI investigation and confirms that the integrity of the process is paramount.”

The FAI’s Disciplinary Control Unit is investigating the claims after Zayed and Derry lodged official complaints to the match delegate and referee Richie Winter on Monday.

Candystripes boss Stephen Kenny highlighted the alleged incident after the game and also claimed Zayed was subjected to racist abuse from St Patrick’s Athletic fans at Richmond Park last Friday.

The FAI is also investigating this allegation and Pat’s have vowed to cooperate with the process.

Zayed is a Dubliner who played underage football for the Republic of Ireland before becoming a senior Libyan international last year.
