Limerick midfielder Ian Turner named Airtricity player of the month

Ian Turner’s part in Limerick’s remarkable attempt to save themselves from relegation was recognised yesterday when he was named Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland player of the month for October.

His side hauled themselves into the play-offs on the last night of the regular league season, having gone 21 games without a win early on, but were ultimately beaten by Finn Harps.

“If we had got relegated three or four weeks earlier, no one would have said anything,” says the 26-year-old, whose midfielder performances played a key part in his side’s late charge.

“But the fact that we came back from where we were, and gave ourselves the best opportunity against a team we felt we were superior to, was the most disappointing thing.”

The former Cork City player must weigh up his options for next season. "The fact that Limerick have gone down, it's going to be something I have to get my head around . . . I'm sure I'll take advice off the manager and see what he has to say and see what other offers come up and go from there."
