Dinny Corcoran double gives Sligo Rovers some home comfort

Owen Heary’s side win first league game of the season at the Showgrounds

Sligo Rovers 2 Drogheda United 0

Striker Dinny Corcoran scored twice as Sligo Rovers finally won a Premier Division game at home on Saturday.

Rovers were ahead inside three minutes, with Corcoran controlling David Cawley's pass before finishing calmly past one-time Rovers goalkeeper Michael Schlingermann.

Johnny McDonnell’s Drogheda gave as good as they got for the next half-hour, but Corcoran’s second – a header from Danny Ledwith’s pinpoint cross – left the visitors with an uphill task.

Rovers manager Owen Heary was glad to climb above their opponents in the table.

“We wanted to pull level with them on points, and we have a game in-hand, so that is satisfying.

“Performance-wise we played very well at times and passed the ball well.

“It is very pleasing not just to get the win, but to keep the clean sheet and to score two good goals as well.

“Dinny took them very well and the build-up play was good too.”
