Soccer:Two men who sent parcel bombs to Celtic manager Neil Lennon and other prominent figures connected to the Glasgow club will be sentenced today.

Trevor Muirhead, 44, of Kilwinning, and Neil McKenzie, 42, of Saltcoats, both Ayrshire, were convicted last month of plotting to assault Mr Lennon, former MSP Trish Godman and the late QC Paul McBride in 2011, as well as people at the republican organisation Cairde Na hEireann, by sending devices they believed were capable of exploding and causing severe injury.

Both were originally accused of a more serious charge of conspiring to murder their targets but it was thrown out a day before the trial concluded due to insufficient evidence.

McKenzie was also found guilty of posting a hoax bomb to Mr Lennon at Celtic Park at the beginning of March last year to make him believe it was likely to explode.

The package was discovered by a Royal Mail worker on March 4 in a postbox in the town’s Gladstone Road.

It followed a highly-publicised scuffle between Mr Lennon and now Rangers FC manager Ally McCoist at an Old Firm match.

Muirhead and McKenzie were convicted by a jury following a five-week trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

The two men will be sentenced at the same court today by trial judge Lord Turnbull.
