Airtricity League round-up:On another night of unremitting drama, Derry City just about kept their noses in front at the top of the Airtricity League Premier Division table but required a last-gasp equaliser to avoid their first home defeat of the season. The Candystripes required a fortunate own goal four minutes from the end to save a point.

Drogheda silenced the home crowd within three minutes of the kick-off when breaking the deadlock from a corner. Lee Lynch floated the ball in towards the back post and the unmarked Brian Gannon headed the ball into the net off the Derry crossbar.

Derry were hit again before the break when the visitors doubled their lead, again from another corner in the 37th minute, again following a set-piece situation. Lynch again floated in another corner from the left and as the home defence failed to adequately clear the danger, the ball broke to Gavin Brennan and his effort appeared to take a deflection off a defender before finding the net.

Gareth McGlynn gave Derry hope in the 73rd minute when he headed the ball home and Derry levelled matters thanks to an own goal, when keeper Duggan appeared to parry a corner off the body of defender Dave Rogers.

Champions Shamrock Rovers missed the chance to move back to the top after being held to a draw by St Pat’s at Richmond Park. With Derry City dropping points, Rovers would have returned to the summit with a win. Stephen O’Donnell set them on their way with a terrific shot on 19 minutes but sub Danny North claimed a share of the spoils for Pat’s with the equaliser on 69 minutes.

Of the top three, Sligo Rovers were the only side to win as they made no mistake at home to Bray Wanderers.
