Republic of Ireland midfielder Kevin Kilbane insists Steve McClaren's decision to end the Emile Heskey's three-year absence from international football was long overdue.

Kilbane has been one of the biggest admirers of Heskey's return to form which played a huge part in helping Wigan avoid relegation from the Premier League.

And after the way Heskey started the current campaign, Kilbane — who is preparing for the crucial Euro 2008 qualifying double-header in Slovakia and the Czech Republic — said his recall to the England squad was no surprise.

Kilbane said: "I am surprised it has taken so long for the manager to call Emile back into the squad. I really think he should have been back involved long before now.

"Emile was outstanding throughout the second half of last season and this season he has started so well. I think it is well deserved. Emile is a wonderful player and a wonderful talent."
