Sligo decide to stick with Ndo and Dykes for another month

Sligo Rovers

for at least another month with the club having apparently decided to delay making a decision on a long-term appointment.

Dykes holds an A licence and can take charge of the team on match nights for 60 days which, he says, he is happy to do. However, the former defender, whose main role at the club is with the youth set-up, admits he remains uncertain as to what will happen when that period is over.

“I don’t know,” he says. “Maybe they’ll get a dispensation to get through to the end of the season but for the moment it’s us although it’s mainly Joseph to be honest. I’m really just helping him out where I can, as I have a full-time job.

“He is somebody that the players have an enormous amount of respect for, though, and that’s crucial. We’re in a difficult spot and confidence is low because of the lack of wins but I still believe that the group is good enough to get out of this and we’ll look to add to it if we can. There’s not a lot of money to work with but we’ll try to get one or two in.”

The departure of Steven Beattie for Cork also deprives the club of one of its better players in the first half of the season.

Beattie looks likely to fill a vacancy that may be created by the departure of Billy Dennehy with the former Shamrock Rovers midfielder having been left behind as the squad flew to Iceland for the second leg of their Europa League clash with KR on Thursday.

Dennehy was the club’s top scorer in the league last season but became embroiled in a very public spat with striker Mark O’Sullivan at the end of the KR game last Thursday.
