Joey O’Brien pulls out of Ireland squad

West Ham defender will miss the games against Turkey, Italy, Costa Rica and Portugal

West Ham defender Joey O’Brien has become the first player named by Martin O’Neill last week in his provisional 32 man squad for the end of season games against Turkey, Italy, Costa Rica and Portugal to formally cry off.

The FAI issued a statement on Monday evening stating that after discussions between the respective medical staffs at the association and club, it had been agreed the Dubliner would not take any part in the programme of matches.

O’Brien has previously had major difficulties with a knee injury that almost ended his career. This season, however, he has struggled with a shoulder problem that sidelined him for several months.

The 28 year-old played 90 minutes for the Londoners on Sunday against champions Manchester City but it was his first competitive action since the scoreless draw at Chelsea in late January.
