Malachy Clerkin runs the rule of the individual performances of the world champions in Gelsenkirchen

Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich) 6/10

Until the last kick, only had one moment where his heart rate would have crept up at all – stretching time to whip a McClean cross off the toe of Robbie Keane. No chance with O'Shea's goal.

Antonio Rüdiger (Vfb Stuttgart) 4/10

Busy in attack but wasted probably the best chance of the first half with a header. Was turned by McClean a few times and looked shakier the more adventurous Ireland got.

Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund) 6/10

Had barely a tap to do in his primary job as a defender, so indulged himself spraying passes far and wide as he came forward. Beaten to the punch by O’Shea for the equaliser at the death.

Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich) 5/10

Equally idle in defence – one bizarre 40-yard ball across his own goal in the first half aside – but looked lost at times coming forward. Scuffed a poor shot on the hour that barely reached the box.

Erik Durm (Borussia Dortmund) 7/10

Terrific display. Shook David Forde’s bar with that scorcher after five minutes. Started the move that led to Kroos’s goal with a strong run down the left. Vital intervention denied Hoolahan late on.

Matthias Ginter (Borussia Dortmund) 6/10

Headed over from a free just short of the break. Taken off at half-time when it became obvious that Germany had no need for two defensive midfielders.

Toni Kroos (Real Madrid) 8/10

A class apart. Missed with a couple of sighters in the first half but gradually took control and steered the game to his own pleasing after the break. Perfectly placed shot for the goal.

Karim Bellarabi (Bayer Leverkusen) 5/10

Harum without the scarum. Incisive run early on but struggled to find an end-product from that point on. Struggled to find room against a disciplined Ireland defence.

Mario Götze (Bayern Munich) 5/10

Flickered briefly either side of the break, dropping deep and flicking passes inside for Draxler and Müller. Another who got frustrated by the cussed Irish set-up.

Julian Draxler (Schalke 04) 5/10

Not the night the local hero would have been hoping for. Linked well with Götze a few times, particularly early in the second half. Taken off just before the goal.

Thomas Müller (Bayern Munich) 6/10

Thumped the ground in frustration a few times on a night when he was shut down at every turn. Scuffed his chance under pressure from a last-ditch tackle by Walters.

Subs 5/10

Lukas Podolski gave away a careless ball to set up and Ireland attack early in the second half but made up for it with a stinger of a shot soon after that Forde had to palm away. Max Kruse found Kroos in space for the goal, barely involved otherwise. Lost Hoolahan in the build-up to O'Shea's goal. Sebastian Rudy was not on long enough.
