Tottenham secure Harry Kane’s future with long-term contract

The English striker has been in excellent form so far this season forcing the club to act swiftly

Harry Kane's superb form for Tottenham this season has earned him a new five-and-a-half-year contract at White Hart Lane.

The 21-year-old only signed a new deal in August but his 20 goals in all competitions have earned him improved terms and a contract until 2020.

Kane's goalscoring form in the cup competitions prompted manager Mauricio Pochettino to give the academy graduate a run in the Premier League and he has not looked back, netting 10 league goals, including braces against Chelsea and, on Saturday, West Brom.

"The club is delighted to announce that Harry Kane has signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract which runs until 2020," Tottenham said on their website.

Kane, who had loan spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City before getting a regular chance at Spurs, has played 30 times for England’s various youth teams since 2010 with eight goals in 10 games for the Under-21s over the last two seasons.

Born in Walthamstow and a boyhood Spurs fan, he has become a big favourite for Tottenham supporters, who hail him as ‘one of our own’.

Following Saturday’s 3-0 win at The Hawthorns, Pochettino said: ”This is a club decision and the player’s decision.

“This is business, but Harry wants to stay with Tottenham and Tottenham want Harry to stay long term.”

Kane’s superb form is expected to earn him a first call-up to the full England squad.

Tottenham Kane later tweeted about his new deal: “Very happy to have signed my new contract at Spurs! Excited for the future ahead! Thank you for all your messages.”
