Burnley right-back Kieran Tripper set to join Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino is primed to make Burnley's Kieran Trippier his second signing of the summer. The Tottenham Hotspur manager is also interested in Swansea City's Jonjo Shelvey and he wants to add another goalkeeper to his squad.

Trippier, the right-back, who impressed during Burnley’s season in the Premier League last time out, is set to undergo a medical, with Tottenham happy to meet the £3.5m buy-out clause in his contract.

Sean Dyche, the Burnley manager, described it on Wednesday morning as an "active deal".

Pochettino's move for Trippier raises questions over the prospects of Kyle Walker, the current first-choice right-back, and DeAndre Yedlin, the young reserve, who only joined the club in January from Seattle Sounders.

Tottenham have worked hard on Yedlin’s fitness and sharpness but he has featured only once for the first team – as a late substitute against Aston Villa in April. Pochettino might be open to loaning out Yedlin.

Walker, meanwhile, has struggled with injuries but is hopeful of being fit for the pre-season.

Tottenham have already signed the 22-year-old centre-half, Kevin Wimmer, from Cologne for €6m and the deal for the 24-year-old Tripper reinforces the change of emphasis in the club's transfer policy.

Two summers ago, they spent £110.5m on seven internationals, who were broadly of high-profile standing but they have since looked to prioritise the signing of younger, more promising players – ideally British ones.

In January, they took the 19-year-old midfielder Dele Alli for £5m from MK Dons. He was loaned back to Milton Keynes for the remainder of the season but he will now report for pre-season with Tottenham.

Shelvey is still only 23, even though he seems to have been around for some time, making his debut for Charlton Athletic as a 16-year-old.

With uncertainty over the futures of Paulinho and Etienne Capoue, Pochettino would like to bolster his options in midfield and both he and Paul Mitchell, the head of recruitment, are admirers of Shelvey.

Tottenham fear that their top midfield target, Morgan Schneiderlin of Southampton, will join either Arsenal or Manchester United.

The move for the goalkeeper is borne partly out of necessity, in the wake of Brad Friedel's retirement and, also, as a contingency, with Hugo Lloris having made it clear that he wants to join a Champions League club this summer. United are interested but the chairman, Daniel Levy, would demand a massive fee.
