Bale poised to commit to Tottenham deal – with €60m release clause activated after 2013-14

David Moyes will attempt to persuade Wayne Rooney to stay at Old Trafford

Gareth Bale is poised to commit his immediate future to Tottenham Hotspur after agreeing improved terms in principle to remain at White Hart Lane despite the club's failure to reach the Champions League.

The deal is expected to include a release clause for bids over €60 million that can be triggered at the end of next season.

Missing out on Europe’s lucrative elite competition has serious implications for the club’s revenue streams, and left Tottenham vulnerable to bids for their better players.

Chairman Daniel Levy has indicated, though, he will endeavour to add to the squad before next season.

Giving Bale terms worth about €177,000 a week would be a serious statement of intent given a number of suitors, not least Real Madrid, are interested in buying the Wales international.

The 23-year-old scored 31 times for club and country this season but has always indicated a willingness to stay.

Elsewhere, David Moyes would like to keep Wayne Rooney at Manchester United and the new manager is hopeful he can convince the striker his future remains at the club.

Moyes, who spent a first day of work as United’s manager visiting the club’s Carrington training ground, will make resolving Rooney’s future one of his priorities. He was welcomed yesterday by the news that Rio Ferdinand will sign a new one-year contract no later than Friday.

Last month Rooney verbally requested to leave this summer if he could not be guaranteed a regular starting place.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are close to making Kolo Toure their first summer signing. The 32-year-old is available on a free transfer next month and he has not been offered an extension at Manchester City.
