League of Ireland: Drogheda United picked up their first three points in five attempts and moved a step closer to the Premier Division title with a 1-0 win over Derry City.

Guy Bates, who scored on his debut last week, scored the only goal of the game in the first minute, a strike that proved good enough to inflict a first domestic defeat on Derry since John Robertson took charge in July.

Elsewhere, Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic enjoyed wins over Galway and Bray but remain eight points adrift of Paul Doolins side.

Longford Town remain rooted to the foot of the table, a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Cork City keeping them behind Waterford United.
