Champions League Round-Up:Chelsea recorded a hard-fought 1-0 away win against FC Porto this evening to top their group but a weakened and wasteful Manchester United side lost 1-0 at home to Besiktas in the their respective Champions League matches.
Chelsea sealed top spot in Group D with tonight’s win in Portugal. With both sides already through to the last 16 there was only top spot up for grabs and the London club duly obliged with one game to spare as Nicolas Anelka's second-half header handed Carlo Ancelotti's men the points.
After a tentative start Michael Ballack almost finished off a neat move by the Blues but his final shot was deflected for a corner.
But it was the home side almost took the lead in the 20th minute with their first real attack of the game.
Fernando Belluschi's 25-yard drive was palmed into the path of Falcao by Petr Cech but the Chelsea goalkeeper redeemed himself with another fine save at the feet of the Porto forward.
Porto were unlucky not to break the deadlock in the 29th minute when Argentinian Belluschi, playing his first game for a month, again tried his luck from 20 yards.
This time his shot beat Cech in the Chelsea goal but rebounded off the crossbar to safety.
For Chelsea a 20-yard drive from Deco flashed past Beto's left-hand upright as the first half drew to a close.
At the start of the second period Deco flashed a shot just wide of the left upright, but Chelsea didn't have to wait too long before breaking the deadlock.
With 69 minutes on the clock Yuri Zhirkov broke down the left and played in Florent Malouda, whose cross was headed home from close range by Anelka.
Substitute Hulk almost headed Porto level minutes later but Zhirkov managed to get his body between himself and the Porto man to deny the opportunity.
Hulk was again in the thick of the action with nine minutes remaining but after bursting through the Chelsea rearguard he shot straight at Cech.
MANCHESTER UNITEDslipped to a shock 1-0 defeat to Besiktas in their Group B encounter at Old Trafford.
Alex Ferguson had opted to field a largely second-string XI after their progress to the knockout stages had already been confirmed, but aside from Gabriel Obertan, United's young side did little to convince the manager they were worth a regular shirt.
The hosts did enjoy the better chances throughout but lacked a cutting edge in front of goal, and it was left to Rodrigo Tello's 20th-minute curling effort to win the day for the Turks.
United made a bright start with Obertan making some inroads down the right flank, while Danny Welbeck saw a shot blocked and Darron Gibson fired just wide with a couple of efforts.
Besiktas then drew Ben Foster in a save when Michael Fink's 30-yard drive was well held by the United keeper, while a Federico Macheda effort just flashed wide at the other end.
But despite United's lively opening, it was Besiktas who drew first blood when Tello made the most of the space afforded to him by curling a 25-yard effort which took a slight deflection off the head of Rafael Da Silva and left Foster with no chance.
United were unperturbed and continued to attack the visitors' goal with the spaghetti-legged Obertan forcing Recber Rustu in a good save with his legs after a flowing Red Devils attack.
But Besiktas almost doubled their lead when, five minutes before the interval, Fink found himself in space, but his shot grazed the outside of the post with Foster caught flat-footed.
And it was the Turks who started the second period with their tails up; Delvson Bobo lashing a shot just over the bar in the early exchanges.
United did come to life again around the hour mark with Obertan's fine run and shot drawing a good low save from Rustu, while moments later the French winger saw a header land on the roof of the net.
Michael Owen entered the action after 69 minutes as a replacement for the ineffective Ji-Sung Park, while Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra were also brought on shortly afterwards.
But the trio could not inspire the Red Devils to an equaliser, with headers from Macheda and Wes Brown - which both produced fine reaction saves from Rustu - the closest they came to salvaging something from a disappointing evening as United lost at home for the first time in eight and a half months.
The defeat also means United now need a point in their final group game away at Wolfsburg to secure top spot in the group.
