Stephen Carr is making good progress in his recovery from a hamstring injury and could return for Newcastle against Bolton on Sunday.
The injury ruled the full-back out of the Republic of Ireland's European qualifying defeat to Cyprus and also last night's draw at home to the Czech Republic.
But Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder is pleased with Carr's progression and is looking forward to having the Dubliner available for selection.
"Carrsy has been doing well this week and is on course for Bolton," he said. "He's been on fire this season and in every game he has given me a performance.
"I bet he hasn't been in as good form as this in his career. There are a few players who have the respect of the whole dressing room here and Stephen is one of them.
"If he stays fit we have a heck of a player on our hands and I cannot state how important he is to us. . .hopefully he will be OK for Sunday."
