Athlone Utd - 2 Galway Utd - 1: Jim Sheridan's 80th-minute header secured Athlone Town's place in the third round following last night's clash at St Mel's Park.

Athlone dominated the first half and took the lead on 13 minutes when Pádraig Moran slotted home from close range.

The visitors were then awarded a penalty - Alan Kelly adjudged to have taken down Rafael Cretaro - and Alan Murphy scored from the spot.

It was, however, Athlone who found the winner, Sheridan heading home following a goalmouth scramble. Both sides finished the game with 10 men after Kevin Williamson and Ciarán Foley were sent off.

ATHLONE TOWN: Forde, Hamm, Kelly, McCarthy, Sheridan, Fortune, Hope, Lavine (Harney, 87 mins), Rushe, Lakatos (McGee, 81), Moran (Williamson, 78).

GALWAY UNITED: Gough, Harty, Carter, Frawley, Clery, Foley, Reilly, Cretaro, Moran, Murphy, O'Brien (Keady, 59 mins).

Referee: P Sutton (Clare).
