The Dakar Lions leave for Japan this morning and possibly a second-round encounter with England. The Senegalese were rampant before the interval, apparently burying Uruguay's faint hopes with a trio of goals amid a flurry of yellow cards. But it was only when Diatta thrust his head in the way of Dario Rodriguez's 25-yard shot in injury-time, then turned to watch Morales nod the rebound wide of an open goal, that their passage was secured.
From an unfamiliar position of superiority Senegal slipped too easily into complacency. Barely 60 seconds into the second half Dario Silva's shot was parried by Tony Sylva, the substitute Morales prodded in the rebound, and the comeback was on. In the 69th minute Diego Forlan pummelled a volley beyond the diving Sylva. With legitimate means failing to bring parity, Morales resorted to tumbling in the area; the award was indicative of the referee Jan Wegereef's erratic display, with Recoba thumping in the penalty.
Dominant Senegal were helped by the first of Wegereef's ludicrous penalty awards in the 20th minute - Paolo Montero's weak back-pass letting Diouf round Fabian Carini, who withdrew from his challenge only for Liverpool's new £10 million striker to tumble. Khalilou Fadiga scored to Carini's right. In the 26th minute Papa Bouba Diop hit the net before adding a third in the 39th minute.
