SCOTLAND v ICELAND:GARY CALDWELL admits Scotland require more than a change of fortune if they are to get three points in tonight's crunch World Cup qualifier against Iceland. Saturday's 3-0 defeat in the Netherlands left George Burley's side in third place in Group Nine and needing a win at Hampden to keep alive their fading hopes of reaching South Africa next summer.
Celtic defender Caldwell was at the heart of another baffling refereeing decision in this campaign when he had a goal mysteriously chalked off by French official Laurent Duhamel when the score was 2-0 at the weekend.
The decision added to the Scots’ frustrations following some dodgy decisions in the 1-0 defeat against Macedonia in the opening group game last year.
Caldwell, however, knows it is not only luck Scotland need to get their qualification campaign back on track.
“At times, you need the odd break and so far in this campaign we haven’t really had that,” he said. “But we can’t really rely on luck, we have to rely on ourselves.
“We believed we could go to the Netherlands and get three points; it didn’t happen but now we have to focus and get the win to give us the chance to qualify. It’s a game we must win and we are looking to create more opportunities than we did on Saturday,” he said.
Caldwell looks set to resume his partnership with Celtic team-mate Stephen McManus, who missed the game in Amsterdam with an ankle injury.
Wolves defender Christophe Berra made his first start alongside Caldwell in the Netherlands but the latter retained a diplomatic stance when asked about the possibility of McManus returning.
“When you come to international football, you play with different players,” the former Hibernian star said. “You are settled at your club but there are always call-offs (with Scotland) and you have to deal with that.
“Christophe did very well on Saturday and Mick (McManus) being back fit gives the manager a decision, but whoever plays on Wednesday has a massive job to do,” he said.
