Wesley College 9 St Gerard's College 6:Right wing Andrew Scanlon's three penalties was all that was needed to bridge 115 years since Wesley won a senior trophy. This game at Anglesea Road yesterday was defined by the kickers, Scanlon striking in the 31st and 35th minutes to take them from three down to three ahead at the interval.
Earlier, the St Gerard’s scrumhalf, David Baker, had struck the opening points when referee David Williams spotted prop Adam Garvey going off his feet.
Scanlon’s accuracy forced St Gerard’s to respond and they nearly did so when Sam Kingston skated down the left wing only to be called back for a foot in touch.
There followed a period of stalemate in which both threatened to deliver before Baker landed a three-pointer to make it level in the 69th minute. A replay beckoned but this was undone when the restart caused enough consternation to hand Scanlon a penalty. He coolly kicked the winner from in front of the posts.
