Ukrainian Alexandr Bagach, the world shot putt champion for all of five days last year, will be awarded the European gold medal after officials ruled yesterday that he had not broken the rules in Tuesday's final.
An appeal jury accepted a ruling by technical delegates that weighted attachments to the ankle did not contravene IAAF regulations. Fourth-placed Dragan Peric of Yugoslavia had protested that Bagach had hidden weights in his socks which helped his rotation in the circle.
