Rugby:Ireland prop Mike Ross has agreed a new contract with the IRFU that will keep him at Leinster until 2013. The 31-year-old former Harlequins tighthead was a revelation during his debut Six Nations campaign, during which he lifted his total of caps to seven.
Ross ended the championship by making the telling contribution in the demolition of England’s scrum during the 24-8 upset at Aviva Stadium on Saturday. The set piece has long been an area of Irish weakness until Ross’ promotion to the front row last month.
“It’s been an enjoyable couple of months and I’m delighted to be able to have my new contract agreed and to remain playing for Leinster” said the Cork man. “Since coming back to Ireland, Leinster really has become my home.
“Hopefully I can continue to maintain my performance levels to help keep the team successful and also keep me in the frame for selection for the Ireland team.”
Ireland coach Declan Kidney added: “The IRFU’s policy of keeping as many players in Ireland as possible is an important part to helping Irish Rugby challenge for success in competitions at all levels.
“The news that Mike has made the decision to carry on his career in Leinster is good news for everybody concerned as he has continued to progress well and is a valued member of the international squad.”
Two more of the province’s bright young things pledged their future to the club this morning after agreeing new contracts to stay in Dublin.
Rhys Ruddock (one-year) and Eoin O’Malley (two-years), both former Leinster Academy graduates, have signed new deals.
“We are delighted that two more products of the Leinster underage and Academy systems have signed new deals,” Joe Schmidt said this morning.
“Both Eoin and Rhys have made an impact with their performances in the Magners League and Heineken Cup so far this year.
“The role of the Academy is crucial in the development of our young players and both Rhys and Eoin, with their work ethic and talent, exemplify the Academy products we are fortunate enough to have here in Leinster.”
