There is an unfussy excellence to the way he plays, doing the simple things well and generally adding value every time he touches the ball, invariably beating the first up tackle. Rating: 7

14 Robert Baloucoune

The ball didn't run his way and that was a pity because one or two flashes suggested that if he was given any space he could cause problems. Tidy in what he did. Rating: 6

13 Garry Ringrose

Another polished display, he is unselfish in everything he does on behalf of the team especially in eking out metres no matter how unpromising the situation. Rating: 7

12 Robbie Henshaw

It's hard to credit that this was his first game back after injury given the powerful manner in which he took the game to Argentina physically getting his team over the gainline time and again. Rating: 7

11 James Lowe

Regularly used as a kicking option to try and get Ireland down the pitch he didn't have the same influence he managed in the New Zealand match as the ball didn't run his way. Rating: 6

10 Joey Carbery

He struck the ball beautifully off the tee and there are definitely signs that his game is on the right trajectory in terms of getting back to his pre-injury levels of accomplishment. Rating: 8

9 Conor Murray

His forwards didn't quite provide the service of the previous two matches and he was unlucky once or twice with a stray hand or errant boot but there were times when he was a little slow to execute or to a ruck and over reliant on the box-kick, one or two poorly directed. Rating: 6

1 Andrew Porter

Despite the fact that he was penalised three times he made a hefty contribution to the team in positive terms which included a typically muscular try with a little help from a couple of teammates. Rating: 7

2 Ronan Kelleher

Another high-calibre performance from the hooker in all facets of the game, starting with his lineout work and including carries, clearouts and the odd touchline surge. Rating: 7

3 Tadhg Furlong

A rumbustious performance complete with thundering carries and thumping tackles. He demonstrated his excellent hands in linking the attack from time to time. Rating: 7

4 Tadhg Beirne

A late promotion to the starting team in place of Iain Henderson, he had a fine game demonstrating his athleticism that included pilfering a couple of lineouts while getting through a huge workload, capped by a late try. Rating: 7

5 James Ryan (capt)

His match ended on 38-minutes when he took a knock to the head in the build-up to the Caelan Doris try and didn't return after a HIA. He was typically industrious in his general play and also accurate in the lineout. Rating: 6

6 Peter O’Mahony

He epitomised Ireland's industry and desire with ferocious commitment to everything he turned his hand to and led the team in every sense of the word after James Ryan's departure. Rating: 7

7 Josh van der Flier

Two tries represent the headline but the body of his work was exemplary, a brilliant performance both in attack and defence and for me the best Ireland player on the day. Rating: 8

8 Caelan Doris

Another excellent performance, he plays with great intelligence and vision and as he demonstrated for his try, the power to ride tackles and keep going and going and going. Rating: 8

Replacements

Ryan Baird, who produced another big performance, and Nick Timoney were late additions to the bench, one that added energy and momentum to the team, especially human dynamo Craig Casey who speeded up the Irish attack. Cian Healy and Dan Sheehan scored tries and were very effective buttresses going forward. Rating: 8

Coach

It's been a brilliant Autumn Nations Series and head coach Andy Farrell and his coaching team deserve huge credit for the way in which they have prepared the team for the three matches and the performances they have elicited. Quite apart from the results the way Ireland played in these three matches bodes well going into 2022. Rating: 9
