Joey Carbery has suffered further injury bad luck after Munster confirmed on Tuesday that the outhalf will undergo surgery on a fractured elbow this week.

Carbery was forced off in a makeshift sling during Munster’s Champions Cup victory over Wasps on Sunday and the province have since announced that the surgery will take place on Thursday.

After a 13-month spell on the sidelines following ankle and wrist surgery in January 2020, Carbery has made 13 appearances for Munster since his return while also making his way back into the Ireland squad.

However, he now faces a further period out of action with Munster’s Champions Cup meeting against Castres on Saturday the first match he will miss.

No estimate was given on his recovery time, but Carbery is facing a six to eight week lay-off with rehab and without complications, placing his early Six Nations participation in doubt.

In their statement the province also confirmed that the 14 players who had remained in Cape Town to complete their Covid-19 isolation have now returned home but “despite recent Covid infection with recovery, they have been required to undertake an additional period of self-isolation as advised by public health.”

Calvin Nash will also be unavailable for Saturday’s match with an ankle injury while RG Snyman is out with a knee complaint and Rowan Osborne misses out with a head injury.
